One of the reasons I love being a Georgia lifestyle portrait photographer is that I feel like I really get to show a person’s natural beauty to the world. Lifestyle portrait sessions allow you to really relax and be vulnerable in a way that traditional portrait photography doesn’t. You get to show yourself in an authentic, natural, candid way.
But for those of us who have grown up in the-stand-and-and-say-cheese day and age of photography, it can be a bit daunting to switch gears and and pretend we’re not aware of the camera. So I’ve put together a few tips and tricks to make the transition a little easier for you.
1. Ignore Me
Yep, you read that right. Ignore me. “But shouldn’t I know where you are and what you’re photographing?” you may ask. Nope. That’s the beauty of this! One of the reasons I do a pre-session consultation with my clients is so I can really get a feel for you and what’s important to you. By the time we are in the session, I know what you’re looking for. So, the best thing you can do for me in a lifestyle session is to completely forget I’m there (as strange as it sounds).
2. Be in the Moment
One of the reasons why I love photography so much is because it’s a way to travel back in time. I can look at an image and immediately be transported to that moment, knowing exactly where the picture was taken, hearing a loved my grandmother’s voice, or the cry of complaint from my 5’3″ sister as my 6’2″ brother plops his heavy body onto her lap.
But the reason I can travel back in time with old family photos is because these are real life moments.
That’s the goal with lifestyle photography, too. Years from now, I want you to look at an amazing image and be immediately brought back to that moment. And not because I was there to capture it (because you forgot I was there…wink, wink). You’ll be transported because that moment was frozen in time for you.
3. Trust Your Photographer
Hiring a professional photographer who has experience with lifestyle sessions is key. As a lifestyle photographer, I’ve learned to anticipate those magic moments and have my camera ready for them. This is something that takes a combination of camera skills, instinct, and practice. So part of the magic of a lifestyle session is trusting your photographer.
For my clients, by the time your session arrives, this should be an easy thing for you to do. You and I will be in touch with each other at key points along the Nicoline Photographs experience so I can understand what your specific desires are for the session itself. I do this on purpose so that you don’t have to worry if I’m getting the images you want. By the time of your session, all of that will have been discussed and it will be second nature. This also allows you to focus more on Step #2 and be in the moment.
